In God of War (2018), Legendary Chests are a type of collectible that are tracked in all the regions you can explore. These chests offer great treasures if you can find them - and their contents will be useful in your adventures.

Below you will find information on the location and contents of Legendary Chest divided up by each region in the game. Note that some chests may require you to return to a location at a later time when you are able to solve puzzles with certain abilities.

There are 26 Legendary Chests located in Midgard, with 5 more in Alfheim, and 3 in Helheim (and a fourth that isn't tracked), leading to a grand total of 34 Legendary Chests.

There are 5 Legendary Chests located in The River Pass.

The River Pass Chest 1

  • Contains: Light Runic Attack - Hel's Touch

Found after you enounter your first lengthy attack by Draugr, including your first Projectile Draugr. Climb up the wall with the runes to the right of it, and as you travel down the path to the fallen stone block, Atreus will point out this Legendary Chest on the right. It'll have Hel's Touch, a Light Runic Attack.

The River Pass Chest 2

  • Contains: Talisman - Talisman of Concentrated Vitality

advertisem*nt

After entering the Witch's Cave for the first time after exiting her house, head down the walkway and go left towards some platforms that lead to a boat. As you hop across the stone platforms, make sure to loot the Legendary Chest at the end on your left for the Talisman of Concentrated Vitality.

The River Pass Chest 3

  • Pre-requisite: Shock Arrows
  • Contains: Runic Summon - Murder of Crows

After obtaining both Light and Shock Arrows, return to the Witch's Cave. Head to the bottom floor and create paths using Light Arrows to a wall of sap you can shatter with nearby Shatter Crystal.

Head into the area to the left of the Hidden Chamber of Odin. The blue Hel's Bramble appear to mean that you can't do anything more - but you can. Look up to the left of the bramble to spy breakable wood that you can boost Atreus up to after you smash it.

He'll appear out on a ledge, and you can move a pallet of giant stones over to him to send him across to the other side where a sand bowl is.

After inspecting it, look up at the ceiling to spy runes behind wooden boards you can break with your axe. As Atreus solves the riddle, the platform he is on will lower, and you can jump across to find a Legendary Chest in an alcove that holds Murder of Crows - a Runic Summon for Atreus.

The River Pass Chest 4

After getting the previous chest, destroy the Red Sap Wall and climb up the well to the forest around the Witch's House. There's a Legendary Chest on the other side of the big turtle, covered in rubble, as well as a sand bowl.

Look for a chain to climb up to a ledge and head to the end of the path past the raven to an overlook of the Witch’s House that can let you plainly see all the runes upon the rocks that solve the riddle.

Head back down to the Sand Bowl and interact with it again using Atreus. This will rearrange the crumbling rocks to reveal the Legendary Chest beneath them, and you’ll gain Storm of the Elks - a Runic Summon.

The River Pass Chest 5

  • Pre-requisite: Complete The Sickness
  • Contains: Light Runic Attack - Rampage of the Futures

advertisem*nt

After you obtain the item needed to interact with the Winds of Hel, return down to the Witch’s Cave and head to the area where the Nornir Chest was to find the Winds of Hel. Take the Winds to a receptacle to the left of the bridge to the Witch’s House, then down below to the lone platform in the middle of the lower cave area.

Cross to the other side of the cave to place the wind on an upper platform above some Hel Bramble. Then, destroy the bramble and move the giant pallet of stones to the middle so you can grab the Winds of Hel and jump across to the other side and place it in a stone vault, which will reveal a Legendary Chest holding the Rampage of the Furies - a new Light Runic Attack.

  • Pre-requisite: Complete The Sickness
  • Contains: Grips - Weightless War Handles

This Chest can only be opened after you've completed The Sickness main quest. Once you've done so, head to the base of the Tyr's Temple bridge and have the door to the middle, where Brok's Shop and the Realm Travel Room is. Head down the left-hand stairs to your boat, then head around the base of Tyr's Temple itself.

You'll eventually come across a Legendary Chest surrounded by Hel Bramble. Break it apart to open the chest and receive Weightless War Handles - a set of Rare Pommels.

  • Prerequisite: Complete A New Destination
  • Contains: Heavy Runic Attack - Mists of Helheim

advertisem*nt

To get to this Legendary Chest, you'll first need to zipline here from the top of the Isle of Death to the North. Once you've done this, climb up the wall, go through the shipwreck and then climb up another wall to find a Rune door surrounded by Scorn Poles. Each of the Scorn Poles hides red urns near or above them you can blow up, allowing you to take out the Poison Wolves that guard the door.

To open the Rune Door, you'll need to hit the various rune mechanisms on the island to match the sealed door, much like a Nornir Chest. To find the first seal, look left from the path back to the old upper dock towards the front of the wrecked ship, and you can spot a mechanism you can spin to a rune that looks like a "B".

Return to the wrecked ship and look for a red urn under the ship next to a Scorn Pole you can explode. Now move under the ship and look right through a gap to spot more urns that will free a nearby Coffin. It will also allow you to climb to the top of the ship from the middle of the shipwreck. Do this, then look down to the left to spot another rune mechanism down where the East dock was and match the "p" looking rune.

Finally, jump across to the other side of the wrecked ship, and look left over the side of the ship to spot red urns behind the last covered rune mechanism. It only has one paddle, so head down to the left side of the rune and match it to the "E" looking rune to open the sealed Rune Door.

The Legendary Chest contains the Mists of Helheim - a Heavy Runic Attack for your axe, as well as Pristine Ore of the Realm, a resource only found here.

There are two legendary chests located on the Isle of Death. One requires a later game upgrade, while the other requires the waters of the Lake of Nine to have gone down twice.

Isle of Death Chest 1

advertisem*nt

  • Pre-requisite: Complete A New Destination
  • Contains: Axe Pommel - Ymir's Breath

Once the waters have gone down twice, make your way back up to the top of the Isle of Death, which is where the original shore was when you first arrived at the Lake of Nine. Once there, walk under the ship wreckage and slide down the rope back down to the bottom of the island to reach the Legendary Chest: inside is a rare axe pommel called Ymir’s Breath.

Isle of Death Chest 2

  • Pre-requisite: Complete The Sickness
  • Contains: Grips - Explosive Grips of Fire

The final Legendary Chest on the Isle of Death was probably one of the first collectibles you spotted upon visiting, but you can't open it until more than halfway into the game. The chest is covered in Hel's Bramble next to the brazier from the favor Unfinished Business. Simply use Tap to Reveal to burn the bramble and obtain the Explosive Grips of Fire.

There are 2 Legendary Chests located at Stone Falls, and one will require you to re-explore the area once the waters of the Lake of Nine have gone down twice.

Stone Falls Chest 1

advertisem*nt

  • Contains: Talisman - Golden Talisman of Protection

Once you arrive at the dock the first time the waters go down in the Lake of Nine, continue straight ahead to a chain that lifts the gate. When lifting up the gate, one in the background closes, blocking access to the chest.

To solve this issue, use the chain to raise the closest gate back up, then head through it. Kill the Revenant and Wurms on the other side, then turn right to spot a raised bridge held up by a rope. Throw your axe at the disc in the middle of the rope to break it and lower the bridge, allowing you to bypass the first gate!

Return to the chain and use it to lower the nearest gate and raise the farther one. Now go right and across the wooden bridge to get around the first gate, then head through the farther one and open the chest to nab the Golden Talisman of Protection.

Stone Falls Chest 2

  • Pre-requisite: Complete A New Destination

When the waters of the Lake of Nine have gone down twice, return to the Stone Falls to find giant wheels covered in red sap. If you use the water wheel located inland, you can shoot the sap as it passes behind the Legendary Chest to break it apart, allowing you to open it. Inside is an Axe Pommel called the "Deadly Grip of Fury."

advertisem*nt

  • Pre-requisite: Complete The Sickness
  • Contains: Grips - Grips of Cursed Flame

This part takes multiple steps - and also nets you a Nornir Chest too - as you must clear the roots that surround the tunnel with the active Winds of Hel receptacle by lowering the gate partially near the shore, and throwing your axe to get rid of the roots. Now make the trek to the opposite side so you can enter the tunnel and grab the Winds of Hel.

Back up and turn left to find another receptacle above a sealed gate that will open once you place the winds here. You can't reach the winds from the other side of the gate from this angle, but you can climb back up to where the Nornir Chest is.

From the Nornir Chest, look to the left to spot a climbing area along the wall taking you up to a high ledge with another receptacle. From here you can jump across a ledge to the other side of the gate - giving you a vantage point to claim the Winds and take them back to the receptacle you just passed.

Grab the winds again and turn around to run next to the right gate and hop across above it, then turn left to look down past the gate for another receptacle to place it in.

Drop down next to the gate and grab the Winds of Hel, and from this spot you can dash through the small tunnel to the shore below where the tomb waits to be unlocked, and you can open the Legendary Chest to get the Grips of Cursed Flame.

advertisem*nt

  • Contains: Light Runic Attack - Leviathan's Wake

There is 1 Legendary Chest located in Veithurgard, an area you can get to by using the wheel mechanism at the Stone Falls.

Make your way through the Veithurgard Keep until you must release and defeat the Fire Troll. He leaps and stomps the ground to shoot out lava waves. Use axe throws when the lava is spurting out of the troll’s feet. Go in to deal heavy damage when the fire has cleared. Use runic attacks or Spartan Rage to interrupt any stomps that catch you off guard.

Defeating the Troll will drop a key that is for the large double doors in the back of the chamber. These lead to a Legendary Chest with the Light Runic Attack "Leviathan’s Wake" inside.

  • Contains: Light Runic Attack - Fury of the Ice Troll

There is 1 Legendary Chest to find in the Volunder Mines, during the Second Hand Soul quest.

Once you enter the mines, you'll eventually face the "boss" of the area - a Soul Reaver. Destroy it by attacking its exposed chest and throwing the explosive rocks back at it until it is stunned.

advertisem*nt

Once the Soul Reaver dies, look along the edge of the arena for the Legendary Chest that contains the Light Runic Attack "Fury of the Ice Troll".

There are 2 Legendary Chests located in the Foothills.

Foothills Chest 1

  • Contains: Light Runic Attack - Charge of the White Bear

Once you arrive in the snowy ruins before the mountain where you fight an Ogre, look to the left side for a pile of rubble next to a red urn you can blow up to clear the debris.

To the left of the coffin are two Scorn Poles and another urn you can blast across the gap - but both of poles are equally blocking the Legendary Chest here. Freeze the one closest to you to spot an urn behind the other, and blow it up to get rid of one of the poles. This allows you to freeze the remaining one and open the chest to get the Charge of the White Bear, a Light Runic Attack.

Foothills Chest 2

advertisem*nt

  • Pre-requisite: Complete The Sickness
  • Contains: Light Runic Attack - Blast of Hephaestus

This Legendary Chest can only be obtained once you have the tools to interact with the Winds of Hel and clear out the Hel Bramble.

Head up the path from Sindri's Shop up the wall along the path lined with Scorn Poles. To the right of the path leading up is a stone tomb that has been sealed. If you look up to the left you can spot some of Hel Bramble blocking a receptacle, but it has no wind.

Head back down to the path to the area with some coffins to find the Winds of Hel trapped behind some Hel Bramble and cut it away, then carry it to the stone tomb to unlock it, letting you open a Legendary Chest that contains the Blast of Hephaestus - a Light Runic Attack.

There are 5 Legendary Chests located in the realm of Alfheim.

Alfheim Chest 1

advertisem*nt

  • Contains: Heavy Runic Attack - Frost Giant's Frenzy

Out on the lake that surrounds the Ringed Temple, take the boat up to the North-West beach to the Light Elf Shore. Look for a path to the right that leads into a long tunnel past some roots.

At the other end of the tunnel from the group of roots, head out onto the platform overlooking the beach to find a Legendary Chest holding Frost Giant’s Frenzy - a Heavy Runic Attack.

Alfheim Chest 2

  • Contains: Talisman - Amulet of Kvasir

Take the boat over to the Southeast side of the lake to the Light Elf Sanctuary. A door on the left of the beach is surrounded by roots, so get to higher ground by going through the gate and then right around a balcony overlooking the lake back to a bridge over the beach.

Cross the bridge and look down to spot an angle to hit all the roots at once. With the roots gone, there’s a new tunnel to the side you can take into a small room with a Legendary Chest covered by three pulsating cores nearby - two of which are on separate hanging bars.

Use the nearby wheel mechanism to rotate the bars all the way, and watch as they rotate back slowly to align while facing the only stationary core at the top.

advertisem*nt

Hit them as they align with an axe throw. This will unlock the chest to reveal the Amulet of Kvasir - a rare Talisman that slows time upon perfect dodges.

Alfheim Chest 3

  • Contains: Heavy Runic Attack - Thiazi's Talon

Once you first enter the Ringed Temple Trench, turn around to face the wall behind you, then enter the cell room on your left-hand side.

This room has a functioning lever mechanism, and thus can be used to unlock the cages (the lever in the right-hand room is broken). Check the cells here to find Hacksilver on a corpse in one room, and the other room has a blocked path to a chest you can see from this angle.

Throw your axe at the root over the chest, then leave back to the center room and look into the cell from the blocked doorway. Summon your axe back and it will hit both roots on the way back, unlocking the door and allowing you to loot the Legendary Chest for Thiazi’s Talon, a Heavy Runic Attack.

advertisem*nt

Alfheim Chest 4

  • Contains: Light Runic Attack - Njord's Tempest

This Legendary Chest can be found on the platform below the main light bridge leading to the temple. It can be found on the left side of this platform after the battle to clear out the roots blocking the light crystal above, and you’ll find it holds Njord’s Tempest, a Light Runic Attack.

Alfheim Chest 5

  • Contains: Light Runic Attack - Strike of Utgard

Once you have restored the Light of Alfheim, move around the temple core to get rid of the roots and restore the bridge back to the main entrance. From the core, have Atreus target the newly exposed crystal on the top ring to make a new bridge to the doorway.

Over here a few more Dark Elves will try and get in your way, and they guard a nearby Legendary Chest that holds Strike of the Utgard, a Light Runic Attack.

advertisem*nt

  • Contains: Light Runic Attack - Wrath of the Frost Ancient

There is 1 Legendary Chest to find at Fafnir's Storeroom during the Fafnir's Hoard quest.

To find the chest, you must complete the quest by traversing the main bridge to each room to raise up new paths. When the final bridge appears, cross the bridge to enter an arena of sorts.

There is a legendary chest off to the right. Inside is the Light Runic Attack Wrath of the Frost Ancient.

There are 3 Legendary Chests located on The Mountain.

The Mountain Chest 1

  • Contains: Runic Summon - Falcon's Dive

advertisem*nt

Once you find the mine cart needed to make a lift up the mountain in the central lift room, push the minecart until you can create a platform to the upper area where the rock has gotten stuck. As you pass along the upper platform, look along the left side for a Legendary Chest that contains Falcon’s Dive - a Runic Summon for Atreus.

The Mountain Chest 2

After acquiring Shock Arrows, enter the new door past Sindri's Shop to re-enter the mountain's caves. As you do, turn right and you’ll find World Tree Sap encasing a Legendary Chest in a small rooms. Have Atreus shoot it with his shock arrows to unlock the chest, and gain Tyr’s Revenge - a Light Runic Attack

The Mountain Chest 3

  • Pre-requisite: Complete The Black Rune
  • Contains: Heavy Runic Attack - Hyperion Slam

Upon your return to The Mountain, head back to the central lift room and clear the Hel Bramble to use the secondary lift to a new area. Here, you can climb up a platform to the right to find a door where an Ogre will burst out of.

In the room where the Ogre burst out of is a stone tomb sealed by the Winds of Hel. To find these winds, drop down to the level below and break apart some Hel Bramble on a room to the right to find a receptacle you can carry.

advertisem*nt

Place it near the base of the platform leading up to the upper level, then return to break through a wooden wall door near the Hel Bramble to find a chest of Hacksilver and the Winds of Hel.

Take the wind to the receptacle you placed, then climb up and grab them from up top before sprinting to the tomb to reveal a Legendary Chest that holds Hyperion Slam - a Heavy Runic Attack.

While there are no recorded Legendary Chest in the Thamur's Corpse Region Summary, there is 1 that is unlisted - and it cannot be returned to after breaking through the ice.

  • Contains: Heavy Runic Attack - Blessing of the Frost

After meeting Sindri at his first shop, head along the platforms to a building where you have your first encounter with a Traveler in this level. After defeating him, pull the large stone block out of the doorway and align it next to the dangling Giant's Pendant. Look along the sides for panels to throw your axe at to tilt the pendant to the side, then jump to it after climbing the block.

From the pendant, climb over it and jump down to an upper balcony to find a Legendary Chest that holds Blessing of the Frost - a Heavy Runic Attack.

advertisem*nt

  • Contains: Resource - Pristine Scales of the Realm

There is 1 Legendary Chest in the Light Elf Outpost, an area that appears after the waters of the Lake of Nine have lowered twice.

Use the light crystals on the island to create paths that wind around the island to the very top. At the top of the Light Elf Outpost, you'll find the Legendary Chest that holds the Runic Summon: Bitter Squirrel, which summons a spectral squirrel, Ratatoskr, to unearth consumables.

The chest will also produce a Pristine Scales of the Realm, a Legendary material used to upgrade powerful armor, only found here.

There are 2 Legendary Chests to find at Buri's Storeroom, an island that only appears once the waters of the Lake of Nine have gone down twice.

Buri's Storeroom Chest 1

advertisem*nt

  • Contains: Heavy Runic Attack - Glaive Storm

When coming to shore on Buri’s Storeroom, you should have noticed a large Nornir door. You need to ring three bells to unlock the door. Two of the bells are to the left and right of the door, respectively. The third is hidden behind a gate to the left.

The only way to lower the gate is on the backside of it, but that leaves you trapped with no way back to the door. Go around the back side to find a chunk of red sap that you can use shock arrows on.

Return to the front and climb the stairs to find a newly freed wheel. Spin it to rotate the waterwheel ahead and find a passable gap. Now return to your boat and row to the newly accessible beach.

Lower the gate and then row back to the front of the door. All three bells are out in the open now. Simply ring all three quickly to unlock the door and reveal the Legendary Chest inside with the Heavy Runic Attack Glaive Storm inside.

Buri's Storeroom Chest 2

  • Contains - Light Runic Attack - Rage of the Titans

advertisem*nt

The final Legendary Chest is encased in bramble that can only be burnt with the Blades of Chaos. When you return to Buri’s Storeroom with the Blades, there will be level 7 and 8 Draugrs along with a level 7 Traveler. You must kill them all to make the area safe enough to grab the chest. Inside is the Rage of the Titans light runic attack.

There are 3 Legendary Chest located in Helheim - as well as 1 additional Legendary Chest located past the Bridge of the Damned.

Helheim Chest 1

  • Contains: Light Runic Attack - Spartan Charge

From Tyr's Temple, approach the middle of the bridge leading to Helheim and you’ll find a wall of Hel’s Bramble you can clear away. Look to the left of the Hel’s Bramble to find a Legendary Chest that contains Spartan Charge: your first Light Runic Attack for the Blades of Chaos!

Helheim Chest 2

  • Pre-requisite: Kill the Bridgekeeper, Mattugur Helson
  • Contains: Light Runic Attack - Cyclone of Chaos

advertisem*nt

After you have obtained the ability to harness the Winds of Hel, head back to the bridge leading back to Tyr's Temple.

There’s a small relay game you can play with another Winds of Hel receptacle up on the right side of the bridge. First, clear out the rest of the Hel-Reavers along the length of the bridge, then return to place the Winds of Hel in the first slab on the right.

Now grab it and run to the slab up on the left where you can stash it to replenish your time. Grab it again and sprint forward until you see a statue with a shield and a receptacle in the middle to place it in.

Grab it once more and jump over the hurdle to the next statue on the right, and look on its back to place the Winds. Grab it again and sprint over to the middle of the bridge where the large horn is, and look up along the inner ring to find yet another place to put the Wind.

Now, yank the winds back and sprint up along the left side of the bridge to a dead end - where you can spot a slab to place the wind once more.

Run around to the other side of the slab and grab it, and immediately sprint across the bridge to the stairs and look for a slab above on the right before you go down.

Finally, head down to a lower balcony, turn left and throw it as soon as possible before time runs out to open the stone seal to find a Legendary Chest, and claim your reward of Cyclone of Chaos, a Light Runic Attack for the Blades of Chaos.

advertisem*nt

Helheim Chest 3

  • Pre-requisite: Complete The Sickness
  • Contains: Talisman - The Charm of Infinite Storms

You can find this chest upon returning to Helheim with Atreus after he's better. Enter the main path to the Bridge of the Damned and climb up the first upper platform with a thin bridge going right to a red wall of Sap.

Detonate the sap with shock arrows and look for a chain on the other side to drop down. Here you'll find another small wall of red sap can be exploded to reach a Legendary Chest that holds The Charm of Infinite Storms - an Epic Talisman.

Helheim Chest 4

Though also not marked in the region summary, you can find a Legendary Chest during the Escape From Helheim quest when you are across the Bridge of the Damned. However, this Chest is missable: you will lose it forever if you don't collect it during this quest.

  • Pre-requisite: Start Escape From Helheim
  • Contains: Light Runic Attack - Icarus Storm

Once you have lifted off on the ship, it will get stuck on a platform and you must find a way to free it. As you enter the tower itself to find a spinning mechanism you can throw your axe at to raise a platform.

advertisem*nt

Make sure you're off the platform when you hit it, then duck under to the balcony on the opposite side of the tower to find a Legendary Chest that holds Icarus Storm, a Light Runic Attack for your Blades of Chaos.

There are 2 Legendary Chests located in Tyr's Temple.

Tyr's Temple Chest 1

  • Pre-requisite: Start The Black Rune
  • Contains: Grips - Weightless Grips of Protection

After obtaining the Black Rune inside Tyr's Vault, two Grendels will attack you. Once you've cleared them out, look back to the chamber that trapped you to find that the platform has risen up to reveal a Legendary Chest in an alcove, and open it to get Weightless Grips of Protection.

Tyr's Temple Chest 2

advertisem*nt

  • Pre-requisite: Start A Path to Jotunheim
  • Contains: Heavy Runic Attack - Hyperion Grapple

Once you are able to enter Tyr's Hidden Chamber (not to be confused with Tyr's Vault), head down the lift to where the two chains must be broken. Take the left path through the hall of spinning blades to the room beyond, and look for a stone tomb on the left holds one of two Winds of Hel - while the hall past it has a stationary saw blade with a receptacle for the Winds of Hel, and another to the right.

Pull out the Winds of Hel when the saw blade is retracted to one corner to keep it that way, and return it to the stone tomb in the previous chamber.

Now cross past the blade to find another with Winds in it, and return that to the stone slab as well to open up a Legendary Chest that holds Hyperion Grapple - a Heavy Runic Attack for the Blades of Chaos.

  • Contains: Heavy Runic Attack - Prometheus Flame

There is 1 Legendary Chest in Konunsgard, an area that can only be accessed after completing all of the side quests for the dwarves until they both give you the Favor - Hail to the King.

The chest can be found shortly after you enter the fort and find the secret passage behind the throne. Once you exit back outside, follow the path beneath a waterfall to find the Legendary Chest just waiting out in the open at the edge of a cliff. Inside is the Prometheus Flame, a heavy runic attack for the Blades of Chaos.
